Is it a good idea to tell him I like him?

Sorry if this is a common question, but I like this boy, me and my friend both think he likes me back. He and I are good friends, so an innocent crush isn't uncommon for our situation, right? So I was wondering if I should tell him I like him, a relative of his has recently passed away, and from what I gather they were close. My friend tells me he seems to be lashing out at people who try to get close to him. I don't want to upset him, and it is really more crush oriented than all that romantic. Is it a good idea to tell him I like him, or should I give it time. Thank you for your answers.
